Getting started
What is WrenchLane?
WrenchLane is an AI diagnostic and repair assistant for car workshops. You choose the car, describe the problem or enter the fault codes, and get possible causes ranked for that exact vehicle, with checks to run, a repair guide and invoice text. It works in the browser and in the WrenchLane apps for iPhone, iPad and Android.
Learn more: Diagnostic (vehicle-first start), Possible causes ranked by probability and severity, WrenchLane app for iPhone, iPad and Android
How do I sign up?
Open app.wrenchlane.com, click Sign up and fill in an account name (your workshop or your own name), country, email and password. Accept the terms, click Sign up for free and enter the code we email you. You are signed in and your workshop starts on the Free plan.
Learn more: Sign up for free
Do I need a credit card to start?
No. Every new workshop starts on the Free plan without a card. You only add a card when you buy a paid plan.
Learn more: Free (limited), Sign up for free
Is there a free trial of the paid plans?
No. Paid plans are charged from the first day; there has been no self-serve free trial since 26 August 2026. The One plan comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee, and every paid plan can be cancelled anytime. Trial periods are only set up by the WrenchLane sales team or through a partner programme, and a banner then counts down the days.
Learn more: Trial period (sales and partner trials), Upgrade with Stripe Checkout
Why does the country I choose at signup matter?
The country decides which vehicle search and data your workshop gets. Workshops in the US, Canada and Mexico get MOTOR Images & diagrams, workshops in the 32 European countries get InfoPro technical data, and other countries get AI diagnostics, TSBs and Ask WrenchLane without premium data. US and UK accounts use imperial units.
Learn more: Workshop country (decides data region)
What equipment do I need?
A computer, tablet or phone with an internet connection, in the browser or in the WrenchLane app. You keep your own OBD reader: type the codes, say them, or take a photo of the reader's screen.
Learn more: OBD reader photo scan (fault codes from a photo), WrenchLane app for iPhone, iPad and Android
Where can I read how each part of the app works?
Menu, Help & docs, Get started opens a guide with a section for each part of the app available in your region. Menu, Help & docs, New features lists what changed in each version.
Learn more: Get started guide, New features and product overview
How do I contact support?
Go to Menu, Support, write a title and a message and click Send; the reply comes to your email. You can also email support@wrenchlane.com.
Learn more: Support
Can I see a demo before I sign up?
Yes. On wrenchlane.com you can book a demo and bring a recent diagnostic challenge from your shop, which is used as a live example, or email hello@wrenchlane.com. The WrenchLane YouTube channel also has a short video for every release from 3.1 to 3.10.
Learn more: Book a demo / Contact / Support, WrenchLane YouTube channel (demos, release videos, fault-code shortlists)
Diagnostics
How do I run a diagnosis?
Select the vehicle on Start, click the Diagnostic card and choose New diagnostic. Fill in the description, the error codes and the mileage, then click Analyze.
Learn more: Diagnostic (vehicle-first start), Diagnostic form: description, error codes and mileage
Can I diagnose a car without a fault code?
Yes. A description of the symptoms is enough, for example a noise or a rough idle. The form needs either a description or at least one error code.
Learn more: Diagnostic form: description, error codes and mileage
Which fault code formats can I enter, and how many?
Codes such as P0011, 12345 or 3F4A work, and up to 20 codes are looked up at a time. Manufacturer codes such as BMW CD0100 are looked up whole, and each code's meaning appears under the field as you type.
Learn more: Live fault code descriptions as you type, Diagnostic form: description, error codes and mileage
Do I have to type the codes from my scan tool?
No. Click the camera button next to Error codes and take or choose a photo (JPEG or PNG) of the scan tool's screen; WrenchLane reads the codes and their descriptions into the form. You can also speak them with the microphone.
Learn more: OBD reader photo scan (fault codes from a photo), Voice input for the problem description
Can I speak instead of typing?
Yes. Click the microphone in the Description field and describe the car, the codes and what you have already checked. Recording stops after about 2 seconds of silence or when you click again, and the text is added to the description.
Learn more: Voice input for the problem description
Why does WrenchLane ask me questions before the analysis?
When the description and codes are not specific enough, a Help us understand better panel shows a few targeted questions with one-tap answers. Your answers are sent with the analysis, and you can dismiss the questions if you prefer.
Learn more: Help us understand better (AI follow-up questions)
What do I get back from a diagnosis?
A list of possible causes for that exact vehicle, ranked, each marked with severity High, Medium or Low. Open a cause to see its description, suggested tests, common symptoms, related systems and components, plus Videos and TSBs tabs.
Learn more: Possible causes ranked by probability and severity, Repair videos and TSBs per cause
Why don't the cause probabilities add up to 100%?
Each probability is the likelihood of that one cause on its own. Several causes can be likely at the same time, so the numbers are not shares of a whole.
Learn more: Possible causes ranked by probability and severity
How long does an analysis take, and what if my connection drops?
Results stream in while the AI works, with progress steps and an estimated time; complex cases can take a few minutes. The analysis keeps running if you reload the page or lose the connection, and a run that fails does not use up a Free plan's daily diagnosis.
Learn more: Streaming AI analysis with progress
What can I do with a single possible cause?
Click Chat about this and choose Why this cause? or How to verify? to get the reasoning or a verification procedure in the chat. Click This is not it to rule the cause out.
Learn more: Cause quick actions: Why this cause?, How to verify?, This is not it
I tested a cause and it was fine. Can I re-run the diagnosis?
Yes. Click Refine diagnosis, add what you found, check the excluded causes and click Re-do diagnosis; the new result takes the eliminated causes into account. Re-runs are kept together with the original as versions, and a re-run can take up to 3 minutes.
Learn more: Refine diagnosis and Re-do diagnosis
What are the checks on each cause?
Each cause has step-by-step checks that say what to look for and take a Yes or No answer. On paid plans the checks are researched for the exact car; on the Free plan you see draft checks with an upgrade prompt. Your answers are saved with the car and carry into the repair guide.
Learn more: Checks to run on every cause
Does the diagnosis use manufacturer bulletins and recalls?
Yes. In European countries, with technical data access, matching manufacturer bulletins, SmartCASE items and recalls are shown above the possible causes. Every plan also gets a TSBs tab on each cause, and since 28 September 2026 matching TSBs also feed into the analysis itself.
Learn more: Repair videos and TSBs per cause
Can I go from a cause straight to wiring diagrams and component tests?
In European countries, electrical causes list the components to check in order, with Locate, Verify and Repair and a guided wiring-diagram test, and an Error code diagnosis card gives guided tests per code. Highlighted part names in the text link into the technical data; in North America they open Images & diagrams. Opening the data needs a Small or Large plan, the One plan's unlocked vehicle or the demo vehicle.
Learn more: Technical-data links in the diagnosis text
What is the repair guide?
Starting the repair on a cause confirms it and opens a repair guide written for that car: a work description, step-by-step instructions you tick off, labor time and parts. It takes about 1 to 2 minutes to create, your progress is saved, and Finish & create invoice completes the job.
Learn more: Repair guide (from confirmed cause to guided repair)
Where do the repair guide's instructions come from?
WrenchLane builds the guide for the exact car from OEM repair information and technical data, together with the checks you recorded, and lists its sources in a "What these instructions are based on" block. Values that could not be confirmed are flagged as needing verification, and in European countries the book times come from InfoPro.
Learn more: Repair guide (from confirmed cause to guided repair)
Can WrenchLane write the invoice for me?
Yes. Click Finish on the diagnostic, tick the causes you fixed (or describe the real cause), list parts replaced and other work, then click Complete & generate invoice. You get invoice text you can edit, copy and save to paste into your billing system, and you can reopen it later from the vehicle page with View invoice.
Learn more: Complete diagnostic and generate invoice text
Can I print a diagnosis or save it as PDF?
Yes. Click Print on the diagnostic result and choose Print or Save as PDF in the browser dialog. Buttons and other interactive parts are left out of the printout.
Learn more: Print or save the diagnostic report as PDF
Where do I find my earlier diagnostics?
Under History on the Start page, filter by Ongoing, Completed, Service or All and open the car. On a diagnostic page, Switch diagnostic lists the other sessions for the same car. The Free plan shows the 5 latest ongoing diagnostics.
Learn more: Diagnostic history: ongoing and completed diagnostics per car, History (vehicles and saved work)
Can I continue a diagnosis on another device?
Yes. Every diagnostic is saved with its car, and reopening it restores the results, your check answers and the repair progress, on any device where you sign in.
Learn more: Diagnostic history: ongoing and completed diagnostics per car
Is there a free fault code tool I can use without an account?
Yes. guides.wrenchlane.com has free diagnostic guides for common codes and symptoms, and a Beta checker that matches a symptom or code to up to 3 published guides. wrenchlane.com also has a page per fault code built from diagnostics run in WrenchLane.
Learn more: WrenchLane Guides (diagnostic guides), Free symptom & DTC checker, Fault code pages on wrenchlane.com (fault-code cluster)
Chat (Ask WrenchLane)
What is Ask WrenchLane?
Ask WrenchLane is the chat for the car you have selected: every car keeps one thread, and you ask in plain language. Type in the search bar and choose Ask WrenchLane, or click Open chat.
Learn more: Ask WrenchLane vehicle chat (one chat per car), Ask WrenchLane from the vehicle search bar
Does the chat know which diagnosis I am working on?
Yes. On a diagnostic page it knows the codes, causes and your answers, and on a repair guide it also knows the repair steps, so you can ask things like "how do I do step 3?".
Learn more: Chat that follows the diagnostic or repair on screen
Can I check where an answer comes from?
Yes. When an answer uses outside sources, for example for part numbers, suppliers, prices or procedures, Sources chips under the answer open the cited pages.
Learn more: Sourced answers with citations
Can answers include diagrams, images and videos?
Yes. Answers can show official manual drawings for the exact vehicle when you have technical data access for it, web images that link to their source, and repair videos that play in the app.
Learn more: Diagrams & images in answers (including official manual), Repair videos in answers
How many chat messages can I send on the Free plan?
3 chat messages a day; One, Small and Large have no daily limit. The count resets at midnight UTC and is shared by the workshop.
Learn more: Daily AI limits on the free plan (chat, diagnostics, AI search), Daily limits (diagnostics, chat, AI search, plate lookups)
What is AI search?
The search bar understands plain-language questions and takes you to the right part, manual, wiring diagram or fault code in the vehicle's data. The Free plan includes 10 AI searches a day; paid plans have no daily limit.
Learn more: Ask WrenchLane from the vehicle search bar
Can I clear a car's chat?
Yes. Clear chat removes all messages in that car's thread, and it cannot be undone.
Learn more: Ask WrenchLane vehicle chat (one chat per car)
Which language does the chat answer in?
The chat answers in the language you have selected in the app and uses your workshop's units, metric or imperial.
Learn more: Ask WrenchLane vehicle chat (one chat per car)
Can I use the chat on my phone?
Yes. On a phone, tap the floating Open chat button and the chat opens full screen over the vehicle page.
Learn more: Vehicle chat on phones (Open chat button)
Vehicles and coverage
How do I choose a vehicle?
It depends on your workshop's country. In Sweden you can use the license plate, VIN or the model dropdown; in other European countries VIN or the dropdown; in the US, Canada and Mexico year, make, model, engine and sub-model; elsewhere a model dropdown.
Learn more: Select vehicle by model (Dropdown), Vehicle selection by year, make, model and engine (US, Canada, Mexico)
Can I look up a car by VIN?
Yes, in the 32 European countries: choose the VIN tab, enter the VIN and click Decode VIN, then pick your version if several are listed. In the US, Canada and Mexico you select the vehicle by year, make, model and engine instead.
Learn more: Vehicle selection by year, make, model and engine (US, Canada, Mexico)
What is the demo vehicle?
Every plan can open one fully unlocked demo vehicle to see the premium data: a 2015 BMW X5 (F15) xDrive 25d in European countries and a 2018 Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost in North America. On the Start page, a banner above Select your vehicle says Try WrenchLane with this demo vehicle; click Try it. The F-150 needs the MOTOR end-user terms to be accepted.
Learn more: Try InfoPro free / Try Images & diagrams free (demo vehicle)
What does "Unlock this vehicle" on the One plan do?
On the One plan you can permanently unlock one vehicle and get its premium data: InfoPro technical data in Europe or MOTOR Images & diagrams in North America. The unlocked vehicle also gets OEM-verified measurements. The choice cannot be changed later, and other vehicles then show Unlock limit reached.
Learn more: Unlock this vehicle
What is on the vehicle page?
A panel with the vehicle's image, engine, power, fuel and mileage, and cards for Diagnostic, Images & diagrams, Service & maintenance, TSBs, Manuals, Electronics and OEM info, depending on your region. Cards show ongoing work, invoices and saved service reports for that car.

Learn more: Images & diagrams (OEM wiring diagrams and component locations), MOTOR Images & Diagrams licence rules
What are OEM-verified values and AI-estimated values?
On Small and Large, and on the One plan's unlocked vehicle, causes and checks show OEM-verified torque, voltage and resistance values for the exact car. Where no verified value is available, and on the Free plan, values are marked AI-estimated.
Learn more: OEM-verified measurements (vs AI-estimated values)
Can I search technical service bulletins on their own?
Yes, on every plan. Open the TSBs card on the vehicle page, enter a description or error codes and click Search. When the match quality is low, results are hidden behind Poor search quality, and you can still show them.
Learn more: TSBs (technical service bulletin search)
