Why Your Gut Feel on Common Fault Codes is Wrong

A single workshop in our data pulled fault code U0416 thirteen times in just over six months, accounting for 85 percent of all such codes we saw across the entire platform. The code indicates invalid data received from the vehicle dynamics control module. For that one specific business owner, U0416 felt like an absolute epidemic. If you asked their best diagnostic technician what the most pressing issue in the industry is right now, they would tell you it is U0416.

Yet across the rest of the independent garages using our platform, that code basically did not exist. Out of 1,615 diagnostic sessions that included at least one readable fault code between February and September 2026, only two other shops saw U0416 at all.

This highlights a fundamental problem in how we think about our trade. A code that dominates your month may be nearly absent everywhere else, which means your shop's own gut feel for what is common can be badly calibrated. Looking at the real distribution of fault codes reveals two distinct realities: universal baseline failures and highly localized anomalies.

The universal baseline codes

Some codes genuinely affect everyone. When a component fails consistently across manufacturers and climates, the fault codes distribute evenly across the network.

The most universal code in our recent data window was P0299, indicating a turbocharger underboost condition. We recorded 58 entries of this code spread out across 24 different workshops. The busiest single workshop accounted for only 12 percent of those entries. This is what a true industry wide problem looks like. It does not bunch up in one postcode or one specific fleet contract.

We see the exact same pattern with P0420 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold, bank 1). That code appeared 33 times across 22 different shops, with a peak concentration of just 13 percent in any single garage. P0300 (random or multiple cylinder misfire detected) hit 26 entries over 19 shops.

These are the bread and butter diagnostics. When a vehicle rolls in with a P0299, your technicians have likely seen it, their peers in the next town have seen it, and the accumulated knowledge on how to trace the underboost condition is vast. You can plan bay time around these jobs because the diagnostic paths are well worn.

The trap of local concentration

The danger for a workshop owner lies in assuming every frequent code in their bay is a universal problem. Our platform data shows that many codes are highly concentrated in specific garages.

Take P0562 (system voltage low). We logged 15 entries for this code, but it only appeared in 3 workshops. The busiest single workshop generated 80 percent of those entries. P0193 (fuel rail pressure sensor circuit high) showed up 12 times, restricted to just 4 workshops, with one shop accounting for 75 percent of the volume.

This gets even more extreme at lower volumes. We logged code B1267 seven times in our dataset. Every single entry came from the exact same workshop. That is a 100 percent concentration rate. P1890 appeared 8 times across just 2 workshops, with one location making up 88 percent of the volume. P0700 (transmission control system, MIL request) showed 7 entries, again limited to 2 shops with an 86 percent concentration in one of them.

Why does this happen? A local concentration usually stems from the specific profile of vehicles a garage attracts. A shop located near a construction hub might service a high volume of identical commercial vans prone to a specific sensor failure. Sometimes, a garage accidentally becomes the local specialist for a particular nuisance fault, meaning every surrounding shop sends that specific problem to their door.

Calibrating your diagnostic approach

Understanding whether a code is universal or local changes how you manage the repair. If a vehicle presents with P2002 (diesel particulate filter efficiency below threshold, bank 1), you know it is a universal issue. We saw 29 entries across 16 shops. You can confidently apply standard industry procedures to track down the soot accumulation or sensor fault.

But if your bay is suddenly full of P0090 (fuel pressure regulator 1 control circuit) codes, you need to recognize that this is a local anomaly. We saw 11 entries of P0090 concentrated in just 3 workshops, with 82 percent in one shop. Your technicians cannot rely on broader community knowledge because the broader community is simply not seeing this problem at scale.

When you mistake a local anomaly for a universal trend, you risk overstocking specific sensors that you will never need once that particular batch of local vehicles cycles out. You also risk misdiagnosing the root cause because your technicians start expecting to see that specific failure on every car that rolls in.

Look closely at the repeat offenders in your own diagnostic logs. Are you seeing genuine industry trends, or are you just fighting a highly localized battle?
