Glossary
The terms you meet in WrenchLane and in workshop diagnostics, in plain language.
WrenchLane terms
- Admin / Mechanic
- The two user roles. Only admins see Plan & billing and Team and can change the plan.
- AI search
- Search that understands a plain-language question and takes you to the right part, manual, wiring diagram, value or fault code in this vehicle's data. Free has 10 a day.
- AI-estimated values
- Values WrenchLane estimates when the plan does not include verified measurements (Free, and One on vehicles other than its unlocked one), marked as estimates.
- Ask WrenchLane
- The chat for the selected vehicle: ask anything in plain language and get answers using the car's data, the open diagnosis or repair, and cited outside sources. One chat per car. The name is never translated.
- AutoRemote
- WrenchLane's remote programming partner for coding, programming, adaptation and similar dealer-level work the workshop's own tool cannot do, offered on causes and repair steps in 32 European countries.
- Available data
- A popover showing which technical data exists for the selected vehicle.
- Checks to run
- Step-by-step checks on every cause, each with what to expect and a Yes or No answer, saved on the car. Paid plans get checks researched for the exact car; Free gets draft checks.
- Complete diagnostic
- Closing a diagnostic: tick the causes that were fixed, list parts and work, and WrenchLane writes editable invoice text.
- Daily limits
- The per-day caps on Free (diagnostics, chat messages, AI searches, plate lookups), counted per workshop and reset at midnight UTC.

- Add information, review answers and excluded causes, then run a new analysis that takes them into account.
- Repair guide
- Starting a repair on a cause confirms it and opens step-by-step instructions to tick off, with a sources block, labor time and parts. The guide is built for the exact car from OEM repair information and technical data and lists its sources; the steps are not copied from the manufacturer's manual.
- Service & maintenance
- The service planner: choose the interval (or let Suggest pick it from mileage and registration date), see tasks and parts, then perform the service as a checklist.
- Service report
- A finished service saved on the car, reopened from the vehicle page or History.
- Severity
- How serious a cause is (High, Medium, Low), shown separately from how likely it is.
- Small

- WrenchLane
- The AI diagnostic and repair assistant for independent workshops, on the web at app.wrenchlane.com and as an iPhone, iPad and Android app.
- WrenchLane Guides
- The free public site guides.wrenchlane.com with plain-language diagnostic guides for common fault codes and symptoms.
Automotive terms
- Adjustments / specifications
- Manufacturer values such as tightening torques, clearances and capacities.
- Aftermarket
- Parts, tools and data not from the carmaker, used by independent workshops.
- CAN-Bus
- The network the control units use to talk to each other; network faults show up as U codes.
- Code systems (P, C, B, U)
- The first letter of a DTC names the system: P powertrain, C chassis, B body, U network (communication between control units).
- Coding, programming and adaptation
- Software work on a control unit after a part is replaced: downloading software, coding it to the car, and teach-in or adaptation. Often needs a factory tool.
- Comeback
- A car that returns because the first repair did not fix the fault.
- Component location
- Where a part sits in the car (engine bay, fuse box, diagnostic connector).
- Diagnostic connector
- The socket in the car where the scan tool plugs in (OBD or EOBD plug); its position is shown under Locations.
- DTC (diagnostic trouble code)
- A standardised code an ECU stores when it detects a fault, such as P0300. WrenchLane accepts several at once and looks each one up as you type.
- ECU (electronic control unit)
- A computer that controls a system in the car, such as the engine, brakes or body. Fault codes are stored per ECU.
- ECU pin and connector
- The pin-by-pin table for a component's or control unit's connector, used to measure at the right point.
- Engine management system
- The engine ECU and its software family; some vehicles need it chosen to get the right data.
- Fault code / error code
- Everyday names for a DTC. The app's form says "Error codes", other screens say "Fault code".
- Freeze frame
- A snapshot of sensor values (speed, temperature, load and so on) the ECU stores at the moment a fault code is set. The app has no freeze-frame field; useful values can go in the Description.
- Fuses and relays
- The circuit-protection and switching components, with their positions and assignments.
- Generic and manufacturer-specific codes
- Generic codes mean the same on every car (for example P0xxx); manufacturer-specific codes are defined by the carmaker (for example P1xxx, or BMW codes like CD0100). WrenchLane keeps manufacturer codes whole when looking them up.
- Independent workshop
- A workshop not tied to one carmaker's dealer network. WrenchLane's core customer.
- Infopro Digital Automotive / HaynesPro / InfoPro
- Infopro Digital Automotive is the European data partner, the team behind HaynesPro. The app shows its technical data as "InfoPro", in 32 EU, EFTA and UK countries.
- Labour time / book time
- The standard time the manufacturer or data provider sets for a repair task, used to quote and invoice.
- Light commercial vehicle (LCV)
- Vans and small trucks, for example from a Caddy to a Sprinter.
- Lubricants and fluids
- The specified oils, coolant, brake fluid and quantities for the vehicle.
- Mileage / odometer reading
- The distance the car has driven; WrenchLane uses it to weight age-related causes and to suggest the service interval.
- MOTOR
- The North American data partner behind Images & diagrams (US, Canada, Mexico). Users accept MOTOR's end-user terms before use.
- OBD reader / scan tool
- The device that reads fault codes from the car. WrenchLane works with the one the workshop already has: photograph its screen or type the codes.
- OBD-II / EOBD
- On-board diagnostics: the standard that makes cars report emission-related faults through a diagnostic socket. OBD-II is the US standard, EOBD its European equivalent.
- OEM (original equipment manufacturer)
- The carmaker, and by extension data and parts that come from it. "OEM data" means manufacturer data.
- Recall
- A manufacturer campaign to fix a safety or compliance defect, usually done by the dealer at no cost to the owner.
- Repair order (RO)
- The workshop's record of the job for a customer's car: work, parts and labour. In WrenchLane the closest things are the job sheet and the invoice text.
- SAE J2012 failure type
- The standard that defines DTCs, including the two-character failure-type byte after a code (the "-12" in P0011-12, for example "Circuit short to battery"). WrenchLane shows the failure-type name next to the code.
- Service indicator reset
- The procedure to reset the service light or message after a service.
- Service interval
- The manufacturer's schedule of service tasks by distance or age.
- SmartCASE
- Documented real repair cases from the data partner: symptom, cause and solution for a vehicle.
- TecDoc
- The parts catalogue standard; service parts lists show TecDoc generic article ids.
- Timing belt / timing chain
- The belt or chain that keeps the crankshaft and camshafts in time; replacing it follows a vehicle-specific procedure.
- Torque value
- The tightening torque a bolt must be tightened to, in Nm.
- TSB (technical service bulletin)
- A notice from the manufacturer to workshops about a known problem and its fix on specific vehicles. Not a recall.
- VESA
- The electronics data set (systems, components, wiring, locations, fault codes) behind the Electronics card; the pricing page lists "Wiring diagrams (VESA Electronics)".
- VIN (vehicle identification number)
- The 17-character code that identifies an individual vehicle. WrenchLane decodes it to the exact vehicle in InfoPro countries (EU, EFTA, UK); the US, Canada and Mexico pick the car by year, make, model and engine instead.
- VRM / license plate
- The vehicle registration mark on the plate. In WrenchLane, plate lookup works for Swedish plates only.
- Warning lights
- The dashboard symbols and what each one means.
- Wiring diagram
- A drawing of an electrical circuit: components, connectors, wire colours and pins.
