A 2010 Renault Master III arrived with a rough start and two chassis codes right after another workshop replaced the glow plugs. The technician noted that the engine ran rough exactly at the moment the key was turned. The customer was clear about the timeline. The vehicle had no starting issues before the glow plug job, but the fault appeared immediately after the van was returned to them.
The only stored fault codes were C10000 and C502764. Seeing chassis codes on a drivability complaint is always a flag. It usually points to an electrical disturbance bleeding across the network, rather than a purely mechanical failure inside the engine block.
We ran these symptoms and codes through our diagnostic platform to see how the prior repair correlated with the current fault. The engine ranked four distinct causes, all tied directly to the physical work involved in a glow plug replacement on the M9T engine.
Damaged wiring harness or connections
The system ranked a damaged glow plug wiring harness or connection as the most likely cause, sitting at 90 percent probability with a medium severity. This is highly probable because the fault occurred immediately after the parts were swapped.
The M9T engine is sensitive to disturbances in the wiring harness near the cylinder head. The harness routing makes it vulnerable during repairs. The wires to the glow plugs could have been damaged or pinched by a tool. Just as likely, the connections might have come loose, or the pins could have suffered from poor contact when the connectors were manipulated.
Poor contact means one or more glow plugs will not receive the correct current, or they might receive an erratic signal. This results in uneven cylinder temperatures during pre-heating, which directly causes the rough running at the exact moment of cranking. Furthermore, erratic electrical connections here create noise that can trigger generic C-codes in other modules.
The recommended diagnostic step here is a thorough visual inspection of the glow plug wiring harness, followed by a specific check for terminal back-out in the connectors. A backed-out pin will look fine from the outside but fails to make physical contact when the connector is seated.
Incorrect or incompatible glow plugs
Ranked closely behind at 85 percent probability was the installation of incorrect or incompatible glow plugs. The newly installed parts might not meet the strict OEM specifications for the Renault M9T engine, particularly regarding their resistance values.
Modern glow plug control modules and the main engine control module monitor the resistance of the glow plug circuit very closely. If the replacement plugs are defective from the factory, or if they are simply the wrong part number with a different resistance profile, the control module will detect the discrepancy.
When the module sees unexpected resistance, it may cut or alter the pre-heating cycle to protect the circuit. This leads to insufficient heating in one or more cylinders, causing the rough and raw engine operation right after the key is turned.
To rule this out, the platform suggested running a resistance test on the newly installed glow plugs. A visual inspection of the plugs themselves is also recommended, provided they can be accessed without creating further issues, to verify the part numbers against OEM data.
Disturbed ground points
At a 70 percent probability, the system highlighted disturbed ground points or reference voltages. Gaining access to the glow plugs on this engine often requires moving or unbolting other components, including ground straps and wiring looms.
A compromised ground connection to the engine block or cylinder head creates significant problems. During the glow cycle, the current draw is exceptionally high. If the ground path is poor, this high current draw creates noisy signals that feed back to the engine control module.
This noisy electrical environment is known to trigger internal fault codes and cause rough engine operation. Crucially, the diagnostic data noted that this exact scenario can trigger related ABS codes, specifically noting 40201C, which indicates problems with the supply voltage to the ABS pump. This perfectly explains why a starting issue is accompanied by chassis codes.
The suggested diagnostic tests for this path involve a close inspection of all ground points near the work area. The technician should also perform a voltage drop measurement across the ground circuit while the glow plugs are energized to expose any hidden resistance.
Damaged nearby sensors
The final ranked cause, at 60 percent probability, was damage to nearby sensors or their wiring. The workspace around the glow plugs is tight, and the wiring for critical components like the crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, and the fuel rail pressure sensor runs through the same area.
During the previous repair, the wiring to one of these sensors could easily have been pinched, stretched, or accidentally disconnected. If the engine control module receives an erratic or missing signal from the crank or cam sensor during startup, it will struggle to calculate the correct injection timing. Similarly, a corrupt signal from the rail pressure sensor will cause incorrect fuel delivery.
Either of these scenarios will result in a rough start and poor running immediately upon cranking. The platform advised a visual inspection of the sensor wiring and connectors in the immediate vicinity of the glow plugs. If the wiring appears intact, the next step is to monitor the live data for these specific sensors during the cranking phase to spot any dropouts or erratic readings.
Reviewing the prior repair
Whenever a vehicle presents with a new fault immediately following a repair, the most efficient diagnostic path begins exactly where the last mechanic left their tools. By treating the physical area of the previous repair as the primary suspect, you avoid chasing phantom codes across the vehicle network.
