Diagnosing Code U015100 on a 2010 Ford Mondeo

A technician threw a new seatbelt and buckle at a 2010 Ford Mondeo to clear an airbag light, but the dashboard stayed lit. I see a lot of diagnostic logs in the diagnostic platform we build, and this one stood out. The code logged was U015100.

Why the parts cannon misfired

Code U015100 points to a communication failure with the Restraints Control Module. The instrument cluster and body control module expect periodic CAN messages from the RCM every two to five seconds. If those messages do not arrive, the code is set immediately when the ignition is turned on, and the airbag warning light illuminates.

Replacing a belt or buckle does nothing in this scenario. The RCM is essentially offline, meaning it cannot read the status of those new components anyway.

Power and ground fundamentals

Our own data ranked the most likely cause at 40 percent: a complete loss of power or ground to the RCM. On the Mondeo Mk4/III, the RCM gets its power via a dedicated fuse in the central fuse box under the glovebox, and it grounds to the chassis at the transmission tunnel.

The correct diagnostic path starts with measuring voltage across fuse F85 with the ignition on. From there, you perform a load test of the power and ground circuits at the RCM connector using a test light, and check for voltage drop over the RCM ground point on the tunnel.

Network and connector vulnerabilities

If the module has power, an open or short circuit in the HS-CAN wiring ranks as the next suspect at 30 percent. You verify the physical network layer with a resistance check across pins 6 and 14 at the diagnostic connector, followed by checking continuity between the RCM and the CAN bus.

However, the physical environment of the RCM creates its own problems. Mounted low on the transmission tunnel under the center console, the module connector is highly vulnerable to moisture from AC evaporator condensation or spilled drinks. This moisture causes galvanic corrosion or fretting on the delicate CAN and power pins. This ranks at a 20 percent probability and requires a visual inspection alongside a pin drag test on the terminals.

The internal hardware failure

An internal failure of the RCM only ranks at 15 percent. This usually involves a failed CAN transceiver or cracked solder joints on the circuit board caused by aging and thermal cycling. You only make the call to condemn the module after verifying the external power, ground, and network physical layer, and attempting a direct connection with a manufacturer-specific tool.

Stop guessing and start measuring

When an airbag light comes on, read the specific code before ordering parts. If you are dealing with communication loss codes like U015100, put the wrenches down and pick up a multimeter. Have you seen this specific connector corrosion issue on the Mondeo?
