A 2012 Renault Megane III Coupé rolled into a workshop in India with a single P0380 code and a customer complaining about high fuel consumption. That combination of a glow plug circuit 'A' code and poor economy requires tracing the engine compensation strategy, not just swapping parts. In our own data, we analyzed this specific code and symptom combination to rank the most likely causes.
The hardware at fault
The engine ranked faulty glow plugs as the most probable cause, assigning it a 90 percent likelihood. Individual glow plugs can burn out or develop an open circuit. The engine control unit detects this unexpected resistance in circuit 'A' and sets the P0380 code. If the plugs fail to heat properly, the ECU compensates after startup by altering fuel trims or maintaining inefficient combustion. This compensation directly contributes to the high fuel consumption the customer noticed. The platform suggested a glow plug resistance test and a visual inspection to confirm this.
Right behind the plugs themselves, a defective glow plug relay or control module ranked at 85 percent. This module supplies power during the pre-heating and post-heating cycles. If the unit fails internally, gets stuck, or develops a short, the ECU reads incorrect current or voltage. The K9K dCi engines are specifically known for issues with the diagnostic line inside this relay unit. We recommended a voltage output test and a control signal check to rule this out.
Tracing the circuit
Wiring or connection issues in the glow plug circuit came in at an 80 percent probability. The wiring harness, connectors, and fuses live in a harsh environment full of heat and vibration. Chafed wires, melted insulation, corroded terminals, or blown fuses disrupt the current flow. A blown fuse often indicates a short circuit elsewhere in the system. The recommended steps here were a visual inspection and a voltage drop test.
The temperature sensor connection
A faulty engine coolant temperature sensor ranked at 70 percent. This is where the fuel consumption complaint really ties into the picture. A malfunctioning ECT sensor can send inaccurate readings. If the sensor is stuck low, the ECU thinks the engine is colder than it is. It commands the glow plugs to stay energized longer and forces an excessively rich fuel mixture. This prolonged enrichment directly causes persistently high fuel consumption. While P0380 is a glow plug circuit fault, an incorrect temperature input influences the ECU glow plug activation strategy. The manufacturer specifically highlights the ECT sensor role in both glow plug operation and fuel injection quantity for cold-start enrichment. The platform suggested a live data comparison and a resistance test to verify the sensor.
