A 2026 Nissan Qashqai (J12) arrived in the bay with a hard starting complaint and a single P0012 fault code stored in the engine control module. The 1.3 DIG-T engine was struggling to build dynamic cylinder compression during cranking, pointing straight to a camshaft timing issue on the intake side.

Hydraulic restrictions and the VVT solenoid

The 1.3 DIG-T (HR13DDT) engine uses an intake Oil Control Valve solenoid to hydraulically modulate the intake camshaft variable valve timing. When engine oil is cold and viscous, any internal varnish, manufacturing burrs, or fine debris inside the spool valve chamber can cause the plunger to stick. Our platform data ranked a sticking VVT solenoid as the primary cause for this fault profile. If the plunger sticks in the retarded hydraulic passage position, the intake valves close late. This severely reduces effective dynamic compression and cylinder air charge during cranking, causing a hard cold start.

Verifying this involves a bi-directional scan tool command test of the intake VVT solenoid duty cycle at warm idle. Technicians should also perform a bench actuation test of the plunger using a 12V fused power source, followed by an inspection of the oil metering ports and internal mesh filter.

Oil viscosity directly impacts this system. If an incorrect heavier viscosity grade was used during a previous service, such as 10W-40 instead of the manufacturer-specified low-viscosity RN17 FE 0W-20, cold starts will suffer. The cold kinematic viscosity prevents rapid hydraulic priming of the intake camshaft phaser chambers. A simple check of the oil dipstick level and verification of maintenance records for RN17 FE 0W-20 compliance is an essential early step.

Mechanical failures inside the phaser

A more severe mechanical fault involves the intake camshaft phaser internal locking pin. The phaser features a spring-loaded mechanical lock pin designed to lock the phaser at its default base timing position when oil pressure drops at engine shutdown. This default position is optimal for engine cranking.

If this detent is stuck, worn, or contaminated with machining swarf, the pin fails to engage. During the next morning cold start, valve train torque drags the camshaft into a fully retarded position before oil pressure builds. This triggers the P0012 code and prolongs cranking. Confirming this requires monitoring scan tool live data of the actual versus target intake camshaft angle during cold cranking, and checking for radial play between the intake camshaft and sprocket while the engine is stationary.

Wiring harness and thermal contraction

Electrical faults can mimic hydraulic issues on this system. The engine control module controls the intake VVT solenoid using a pulse-width modulated signal. In cold conditions, thermal contraction of connector pins and wiring terminals can exacerbate pin fretting or spread female terminals. High contact resistance or an intermittent open circuit on the VVT solenoid power or ground control wire will prevent the ECM from driving the solenoid spool.

Diagnostic steps here require a connector female terminal drag and pin tension check. A circuit voltage drop test under load between the ECM and the solenoid connector will reveal resistance issues that a basic continuity check might miss.

Diagnostic priorities for the HR13DDT

When facing a P0012 and a hard start condition on this engine, begin with the fluids and electrical basics before opening the engine. Verify the oil level and confirm the correct RN17 FE 0W-20 viscosity grade was used. Check the VVT solenoid connector for terminal drag and test the solenoid duty cycle. If the electrical and fluid paths are clear, monitor the live camshaft angle data during cold cranking to determine if the phaser locking pin has failed.
