Diagnosing P0087 on a 2011 Volkswagen Crafter

A 2011 Volkswagen Crafter arrived in a Swedish workshop with the glow plug light flashing and the engine locked in limp mode. The only clue in the engine control unit was a solitary P0087 code for low fuel rail pressure. The technician working the bay noted the exact presentation on the job card, stating the glow plug light was on and the vehicle was stuck in limp mode.

When I see a P0087 on a common rail diesel, the challenge is always figuring out which side of the fuel system is failing. The code simply tells us the requested rail pressure is not being met. Starving the high pressure side

This is a remarkably common cause for a P0087 code on older diesel vehicles, especially if routine maintenance has slipped. The suggested diagnostic step here is straightforward. The technician needs to perform a visual inspection of the fuel filter and the filter housing, followed by a filter replacement if restriction is evident.

Internal pump wear and metal contamination

Ranked closely behind at 80 percent was a failing high pressure fuel pump. These TDI engines often use a Bosch CP4 pump, which has known vulnerabilities regarding internal wear. If the internal components degrade, the pump loses its ability to generate sufficient pressure under load.

Camshaft and mechanical drive failures

The third possibility, ranked at 70 percent, points to the mechanical drive of the pump itself. The high pressure pump on this engine configuration is driven mechanically by the camshaft via a cam follower. If the cam follower wears through, or if the camshaft lobe itself sustains damage, the pump plunger will not be fully depressed during engine rotation.

Without full actuation, the pump simply cannot stroke enough fuel to build rail pressure, triggering the P0087 and the resulting limp mode. Verifying this requires getting eyes on the hardware. The technician must remove the necessary components to perform a direct visual inspection of the cam follower and the camshaft lobe for scoring or excessive wear.

Checking the low pressure supply

The final ranked cause at 60 percent was a weak low pressure fuel pump. Located in the fuel tank, this lift pump is responsible for delivering a steady supply of fuel to the high pressure pump, typically at a pressure between four and six bar.

If the lift pump degrades over time, it will fail to supply the required volume and pressure. The high pressure pump is then starved of fuel, leading directly to a drop in rail pressure. The test for this is simple but essential. The technician must attach a mechanical gauge to measure the low pressure fuel supply before the high pressure pump.
